HRV/ Air Exchanger Maintenance
🔄 Monthly Maintenance
-
Clean or Replace Filters
-
Most HRVs/air exchangers have washable or replaceable filters.
-
Check them monthly—vacuum or wash washable filters with warm soapy water.
-
Replace disposable filters according to manufacturer guidelines (often every 3–6 months).
-
-
Inspect Air Intake and Exhaust Vents
-
Outside vents can become blocked by leaves, snow, or debris.
-
Ensure they are clear to allow proper airflow.
-
🧼 Seasonal (Every 3–4 Months)
-
Clean the Core
-
If your HRV has a heat recovery core, gently remove and vacuum or rinse it, depending on the type (consult the manual).
-
Let it dry fully before reinstalling.
-
-
Clean the Ductwork Screens
-
Some systems have small mesh screens in the ductwork near the unit.
-
Vacuum or rinse them to remove dust or buildup.
-
🔧 Annual Maintenance
-
Check and Clean the Drain
-
HRVs often have a condensate drain line.
-
Make sure it's not clogged and clean it with a mild bleach solution if needed.
-
-
Inspect Fan and Motor
-
Turn off the power and check for dust or debris on fan blades.
-
If the motor or fan is dirty, gently vacuum or wipe clean.
-
-
Test the Balancing
-
Systems should be balanced (equal intake and exhaust airflow).
-
If you're unsure or suspect an issue, have a professional check it.
-
✅ General Tips
-
Don’t shut it off: HRVs are meant to run continuously to maintain air quality. Use low-speed settings if you're away.
-
Know your controls: Some HRVs have humidistats or seasonal settings—adjust for winter (prevent condensation) or summer (manage humidity) accordingly.
-
Hire a pro every 2–3 years: A certified technician should inspect, clean, and rebalance the system periodically.
